CARLTON, Thomas (Grimwade p.458)

Post by MCB »

Thomas, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Carlton, was christened at St Sepulchre, Holborn in 1742 and buried there in 1746.
A daughter Martha was christened at the same church in 1745 and also buried there on the same day as her brother Thomas.
Another son Thomas was christened at the same church in 1748.
Their address throughout was Old Bailey from where their father had entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1744 as a large worker and from where he paid Land Tax until 1753.
He appears again on Land Tax assessments at an unidentified address in St Martin parish, Ludgate from 1758-65 which probably relates to the move to Ludgate Street which Grimwade mentions.
His burial aged 60 years, late of St Martin, Ludgate, was recorded at St Leonard, Shoreditch in 1766.
His burial at St Leonard’s may suggest a family association with the church in which case the christening there in 1705 of Thomas, the son of Edward and Margaret Carlton, may be relevant as may be the indentures signed in 1723 by Thomas, the son of the late blacksmith Edward Carlton,to be the apprentice of John Bullivant of the Grocers Company. This Thomas Carlton was made free in 1739-40.
