JACKSON, James III (Grimwade p.310, 343)

Post by MCB »

He was christened the son of James II (Grimwade p.558) and Sarah Jackson at St Luke, Finsbury in 1801. He may have been the James Jackson who entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1824 as a case maker from 22 Richmond Street, Old Street.
James IV, the son of James Jackson III, watch case maker of Norman Street and Elizabeth Eliza, was christened at St Luke in 1830
James III or his father James II entered further marks in 1832 and 1839 as a watch case maker from 10 Norman Street, St Luke’s.
The 1841 UK Census record for him has not been found.
The 1851 and 1861 UK Census both show him born circa 1801 and a watch case maker at 6 Norman Street. The 1851 record shows him living with his son James IV, aged 20 years, who was also a watch case maker.
His death was registered in Holborn in 1870.
The Will of James Jackson III, named the Elder, late watch case maker of 36 Helmet Row, St Luke was proved at the Principal Registry in that year. His executor was named as his son James IV also a watch case maker of the same address. The value of the estate was under £1000.
Volume I, page 254 of The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914 by John Culme provides later history of the watch case business of James Jackson & Son.
