CHARMAN, Peter (Grimwade p.375)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

There appear to have been two of the same name.

Peter Charman I
He may have been the son of Henry Charman, bricklayer of St James, Westminster, who was apprenticed in 1759 to Joseph Hollbrook of the Wheelwrights Company and free in 1770.
A marriage bond dated in 1769 stating his intention to marry referred to him as a jeweller of St Mary parish, Lambeth. This was followed by his marriage to Elizabeth Buckland at St Mary’s in the same year.
A mark was entered at Goldsmiths Hall in 1789 as a gold worker from 3 York Buildings, Strand.
The 1807 Poll Books for London show a Peter Charman of York Buildings entitled to vote.
He appears in the London Poll Books from 1780-1807 as a jeweller at York Buildings, Villiers Street or George Street and in Land Tax records for George Street from 1797-1810.

Peter Charman I or II
Duty was paid in 1800 for the apprentice indentures of James Cope by a Peter Charman as a jeweller from Spur Street, Leicester Square.
.

Peter Charman II
His burial record indicates he was born around 1770. No christening record has been found for him but note the marriage in 1769 of Peter Charman I which may indicate father and son.
In 1803 as a bachelor from St Martin in the Fields parish he married Kezia Fearn, a minor, at St Augustine, Watling Street.
Six of their children were christened at St James, Piccadilly from 1804-11. No address or father’s occupation is recorded. A son William born in 1807 was also a gold worker (Grimwade p.383).
In 1806-11 Peter Charman was charged to Land Tax on property in St James Street.
A son Henry born in 1812 was christened at St James in 1816. His father was recorded as a silversmith in Piccadilly.
Peter Carman was charged to Land Tax on property in Piccadilly from 1812-1825.
Kezia, the wife of Peter Charman, was buried in August 1812 at St Mary Lambeth and a Peter Charman buried at the same church in September of the same year. Although not recorded as relating to one of their children the probability of this is shown in the following detail.
He appears in Poll Books as a silversmith at 64 Piccadilly in 1819 and 1820.
His burial aged 67 years, late of St Mary la bonne (St Marylebone) was recorded at St Mary Lambeth in 1830.

M. Charman, Jeweller and toy warehouse of 32, Aldgate Street, Aldgate is perhaps to be identified with the above.
