WELLBY, John (Grimwade p.370)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He was born in London around 1796.
His marriage to Sarah Chamberlain took place at St George, Bloomsbury in 1820; both were from that parish.
Christening records at St Marylebone in 1825-27 for three of their children show their father as a jeweller from Cirencester Place.
Another child was christened at St Anne, Soho in 1829 recording their address as King Street, Soho and John as a refiner.
Marks were entered at Goldsmiths Hall in 1834 and 1837 as a gold worker from that address.
He was brought to trial for larceny at Middlesex Assizes in 1836 and found not guilty.
The 1841 UK Census, 1845 Post Office directory and 1851 Poll Books show him continuing at 57 King Street as a refiner.
He had retired to Uxbridge Road, Ealing by 1861, had moved to Lewisham by 1871 and died there in 1873.
His Will was proved for probate at the Principal Registry in 1873. The value of his estate was under £7000.
His sons Daniel and John Henry continued the business in partnership until eventually becoming D & J Wellby Ltd.
Further detail of the business can be found in Volume I, page 476 of The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914 by John Culme.
