BURMAN, Samuel I (Grimwade p.377)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

The christening record in 1754 at St Mary, Whitechapel of Samuel, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Burman, shows his father as a working jeweller from Brick Lane.
The London Poll Book for 1768 shows Samuel Burman’s entitlement to vote as a whitesmith.
As a jeweller from Whitechapel he paid duty in 1769 for the apprentice indentures of John Knight.
The burial of Elizabeth Burman aged 3 years six months, late of Fashion Street, was recorded at Christ Church, Spitalfields in 1769.
Christening records at Christ Church, Spitalfields in 1774-78 for three children of Samuel and Ann Burman show their father as a working jeweller from Fashion Street.
Grimwade records Samuel Burman entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1777 as a gold worker from 51 Leming Street, Goodmans Fields.
The 1787 London Poll Book records Samuel Burman as a jeweller in Whitechapel.
Christening records at St Mary, Whitechapel in 1782-90 for four children of Samuel and Susannah Burman show their address as Leman Street.
The 1799, 1802 and 1806 London Poll Books record Samuel Burman as a jeweller but do not show his address.
A Samuel Burman was assessed to Land Tax on property in Leman Street, Whitechapel from 1771 to at least 1855.
From this information it appears there were at least two jewellers of the same name who continued in the jewellery trade from Leman Street.

The Will of Samuel Burman, gentleman late of Bethnal Green, proved for probate on 4th April 1816 is probably relevant (National Archives reference PROB 11/1579/67).
