ASH, Sargeant etc. (Grimwade p.377)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

Sargeant or Sarjeant Ash

His was born in Cannock, Staffordshire in 1755, the son of Edward and Hannah.
He married Lydia Smith, a minor, at St Martin in the Fields in 1780.
The christening record for their son Charles at Christ Church, Southwark has been scorched so that the year is unreadable. It shows his father was a silversmith.
Christening records for two of their children at St Matthew, Bethnal Green in 1794, including son Claudius (see below), show their father as a chandler and one at the same church in 1796 showing her father as a shopkeeper.
Christenings of two more of their children took place at St James, Piccadilly in 1803 and 1807 indicating their father may already have been trading from 64 St James’ Street, Piccadilly from where the partnership between himself, Sargeant Edward Ash and Claudius Ash entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1814 as gold workers.
His burial aged 66 years in 1820 was recorded at St James; his last address was Upper Cheque Row.

Sargeant Edward or Sergeant Edward Ash

The 1851 UK Census shows he was born in London around 1782. He was probably the son of Sargeant Ash but no christening record has been found. Perhaps it was burnt at Christ Church, Southwark (see above).
He married Jane Morris at St Pancras parish church in 1806; both were recorded as from that parish.
Christenings of two of their children were held at St James, Piccadilly in 1810 and 1814, the latter record showing their address as Ryder Street and his father as a jeweller.
Christening records for two more of their children at St Luke, Chelsea in 1817 and 1819 show their address as New Manor Street and their father continuing the same trade.
His wife Sarah died at the New Manor Street address in 1820.
No record has been found for him on the 1841 UK Census.
On the marriage certificate for his daughter Matilda signed at St Pancras parish church in 1850 he is recorded as an upholsterer’s clerk.
He was recorded on the 1851 Census as a visitor at The Cross Inn, Cornmarket Street, Oxford. He was aged 69 years and a commercial traveller (in teeth!).
His death aged 85 years in 1867 was recorded in Clifton, Gloucestershire.

Claudius Ash

He was born the son of Sarjent and Lydia Ash in 1792 and christened at St Matthew, Bethnal Green in 1794.
He married Sarah Butler in Burghfield, Berkshire in 1813.
The christening of their son Claudius George at St James, Piccadilly in 1814 recorded their address as St James’ Street and his father as a jeweller.
The UK Census recorded him as a dentist at Beanfoy or (Beansoy?) Terrace, St John’s, Marylebone in 1841 and in the same profession at Prospect Place, Edgware Road in 1851.
His death was registered in Kensington in 1854.
