Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He was christened at St Bride, Fleet Street in 1755, the son of John and Jemima Lea of New Street Hill. His brother was James Lea (Grimwade p.577).
He signed indentures in 1769 as the son of John Lea, carpenter and glazier of Poppin’s Court, Fleet Street, to be the apprentice of Charles Leadbetter of the Goldsmiths Company and jeweller of Carey Lane. He was made free in 1777.
He married Hannah Myson at St Mary Islington in 1778; he was registered from St Mary Staining parish. His brother James signed the register as a witness.
He entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1780 as a gold worker from Cock Court, St Martin le Grande and another in the same trade from 20 Silver Street, Wood Street in 1788.
He paid for entries in trade directories as a goldsmith, ring maker and jeweller at this address in 1790.
In 1814 freedom by patrimony in the Goldsmiths Company was granted to both his son John Davis Lea (Grimwade p.372) and his son James Myson Lea.
His wife Hannah died in 1826 and he died in 1827 both at Silver Street; both were buried at St Alban, Wood Street.
His son John Davis took over the business at 20 Silver Street and entered his own mark at Goldsmiths Hall from this address in 1827.
