LOYER, Giles (Grimwade p.361, 375)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1799 as a gold worker from 21 Denmark Street, St Giles and was assessed to Land Tax on an unnamed property in St Giles in the Fields from 1798-1822.
Trade directory entries in 1811 and 1822 described him respectively as a goldsmith and engine turner and gold and silversmith at the Denmark Street address.
Henry Frost (Grimwade p.363) entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall as a gold worker from 21 Denmark Street in 1829
The Times newspaper of 15th July 1831 carried the notice of sale of two rose engines, the property of the late Giles Loyer.

The Will of Giles Loyer, jeweller late of St Giles in the Fields, was proved for probate on 8th May 1822 (National Archives reference PROB 11/1657/45). This information fits in well with the end of the period in which he was assessed to Land Tax at Denmark Street but raises the question as to why, nine years later, his name was still associated with the engines put for sale in The Times advertisement of 1831.
