HARDY, Thomas (Grimwade p.320, 349)

Post by MCB »

The christening of a Thomas Hardy, son of Thomas, was recorded at Burstock, Dorset in December 1745.
Indentures were signed in 1760 for Thomas, son of Thomas Hardy, clothworker of Dorset to be the apprentice of John Hardy (possibly Grimwade p.536) of the Clockmakers Company. He was made free in 1767.
He married Susannah Bovell at St Sepulchre, Holborn in 1775; he was from St Mary, Islington parish.
His first maker’s mark was entered at Goldsmiths Hall in 1776 as a watch case maker from Clerkenwell Close. Further maker’s marks were entered from Rosomans Row, Clerkenwell from 1781-1816.
The christenings of nine children of Thomas and Susannah were recorded at St James, Clerkenwell from 1776 to 1792.
Indentures were signed in 1796 by James, son of Thomas Stepney, shopkeeper of Rosoman Street and in 1798 by Joseph, son of Joseph Newcomb, jeweller of Little New Street, Shoe Lane to be his apprentices.
Page 143 of the book Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World notes Thomas Hardy of Rosamonds (sic) Row of the Clockmakers Company from 1767-89 and work of his held at New York University.
Thomas’ burial aged 86 years, late of Rosoman Street, was recorded at St Sepulchre, Holborn in 1831.
