PARKER, John II (Grimwade p.614)

Post by MCB »

London Land Tax records for two properties in St Paul’s Churchyard show the tenants as Jno Parker 1784-86, the widow Parker 1787-92 and John Parker 1793-97. As Thomas Liddiard (Grimwade p.582) registered marks from number 54 and is recorded next in the registers, these properties would have been numbers 55 and 56 although not so recorded.
Grimwade suggested that 1784-97 may have been the trading period together of Hannah Parker, the widow of John Parker senior and their son, also John. John junior had obtained his freedom of the City in 1787 and although the Land Tax records have not been found to be wholly accurate as to the date tenancies changed hands it seems likely John junior began trading on his own around 1792.
The Times newspaper of 6th December 1797 carried an advertisement for the sale of the stock in trade of John Parker, bankrupt silversmith and jeweller of 56 St Paul’s Churchyard indicating that the unregistered mark of 1801 (Grimwade 3670) does not relate to these traders as Grimwade previously thought possible.
