NORVELL, John (Grimwade p.306)

Post by MCB »

John Chappell Norvell married Jane Plain at St Vedast, Foster Lane in 1803; both were from St Michael le Quern parish.
The christening records for four of their children at St Botolph, Aldersgate 1804-10 show no further information.
The christening records of three of their children at the same church show their address as Horseshoe Passage in 1813, Amen Corner in 1814 and Little Bartholomew Close in 1824; all show their father as a spectacle maker.
He had entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1813 from Horeshoe Passage as a spectacle case maker and notified the other changes of address above in 1814 and 1815 respectively.
As a widower he married the widow Mary Osborn (nee Good) at St Michael Paternoster Royal in 1841. The record shows he was an optician from Brickhill Lane and that his father was William Chappell Norvell who was a currier.
The 1841 UK Census recorded him as a spectacle maker aged about 60 years living with his wife Mary and his son Charles (Grimwade p.290, 413) at Maidenhead Court, Aldersgate. John nor his wife Mary are resident at this address in 1851 and no further information has been found for them.

There's a John Norvett listed in the 1851 census for Middlesex > Shoreditch > Haggerstone West > District 22 as an optician. The name doesn't seem to be repeated often and the way the "t's" are formed makes me suspicious of a mispell.

Thus far, I have not been able to find any death or other information about this craftsman.

In the 1851 census he is shown at 81 Phillips Street. He and his wife Mary appear to be the only "Norvetts" in that census.
