AVERY, Andrew (Grimwade p.355)

Post by MCB »

He was christened the son of Philip and Sarah of Popping’s Alley at St Bride, Fleet Street in 1745.
Duties were paid in 1760 for his apprentice indentures by Squire Hewksley, Clockmaker (Grimwade p.318).
He married Sarah Cowsley at St Pancras parish church in 1766; both were from that parish. On the face of it this marriage contravened the usual apprenticeship terms of remaining single for the seven years term.
Their son Philip was christened at St Sepulchre, Holborn in 1767.
He made application in 1777 for freedom of the City by redemption in the Clockmakers Company.
In the same year he paid duties as a Clockmaker for the apprentice indentures of Ebenezer Davies.
He paid Land Tax on premises at Alfred’s Court, Paul’s Alley, Barbican from 1777-98.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1798 as a gold worker from that address.
No death or burial record has been found for him.
