CHAWNER, William II (Grimwade p.463-4)

Indentures were signed in 1811 by William, son of James Bagnald, silversmith of Ray Street, Clerkenwell to be the apprentice of William Chawner Citizen, Goldsmith and silversmith of Paternoster Row.
Thomas Matthew Brockwell, apprentice of William Chawner was turned over to William Eley (Grimwade 405, 502-3, 747) in 1815.
Indentures were signed in 1817 by William Henry, son of Thomas Burwash (Grimwade p.319), watch pendant maker of St John Street, Clerkenwell, in 1821 by William, son of William McCormick, silversmith of White Cross Street, in 1822 by John Cuthbert, in 1828 by William Ledger and in 1829 by George Tolks all to be apprentices at Hosier Lane.
His son William, born in 1817 and apprenticed to his father in 1831 was free by 1838 but began study for the priesthood and was ordained in 1843.
As a consequence Mary Chawner (Grimwade p.463), the wife of William II, took over the running of the business.

Joseph Horton, an apprentice of John Hynde Cotton (Grimwade p.473), was turned over to him in 1811 and again turned over to William Eley (Grimwade p.502 etc) in 1815.

The Will of William Chawner, silversmith late of Hosier Lane, was proved for probate on 16th April 1834 (National Archives reference PROB 11/1829/503).
