WHITEHOUSE, Joseph (Grimwade p.312)

Post by MCB »

He was christened in 1801 at St James, Clerkenwell, the son of David (Grimwade p.699) and Mary, brother of John (Grimwade p. 309) and Nathaniel (Grimwade p.284).
He married Eleanor Holden at St Pancras parish chapel in 1825; both were from that parish.
Christening records for two of their children at St James, Clerkenwell in 1830 show their address as Silver Street and their father as an optician. Silver Street was previously his father David’s business address.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1831 as a spectacle case maker from 3 Wimbleton (Wilmington?) Street.
A further six of their children were christened at St James, Clerkenwell 1834-39, all showing 3 Wilmington Street as their address and their father as an optician; similarly the 1841 UK Census record.
Two more of their children were christened at St James in 1842 and 1846.
His wife Eleanor’s burial in 1849 aged 42 years was recorded at St James, St Pancras.
He was still resident at Wilmington Street as an optician in 1851.
His burial in 1861 aged 60 years was recorded at St James, St Pancras.
Probate of his Will was granted at the Principal Registry in 1861. His last address remained as before.
The value of his estate was under £300.

The business of Joseph Whitehouse appears to have carried on until at least 1913. The Wilmington Street premises were in use until at least 1859, thereafter they were recorded at 43, Warwick Street, Pimlico, London. SW, until at least 1875, and at 37, Warwick Street from 1880 to at least 1901.
