THICKBROOM, George (Grimwade p. 337)

Post by MCB »

He was christened at St Andrew, Holborn in 1776, the son of George and Ann Thickbroom of Saffron Hill.
Duties were paid in 1789 by Thomas Poyntell, Joiner of St Andrew, Holborn parish for the apprentice indentures of George Thickbroom. This apprenticeship is probably relevant since his marriage record in 1837 shows his father was a chair maker.
He married Rachel Whittie in 1797 at St George in the East church.
Christenings of five of their children were recorded 1797-1807 at Lady Huntingdon’s, Spa Field, Clerkenwell. These included Alfred (Grimwade p.288, 333) in 1807.
It appears they were in Warwickshire for a time as James (Grimwade p.312), the son of George and Rachel Thickbroom, was christened in 1809 at St John the Baptist, Coventry. A George Thickbroom also entered maker’s marks at the Birmingham Assay Office 1808-13.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1819 as a watch case maker from 23 Richmond Street, St Luke’s parish.
Rachael’s burial in 1835 aged 65 years was recorded at St John, Hoxton. Her last address was Galway Street, St Luke’s.
As a widower he married the widow Jane Miller at St Leonard’s, Shoreditch in August 1837. He gave his address as Henrietta Street and occupation as watch case maker. Also in August 1837 he registered another maker’s mark from 10 Wellington Street, Clerkenwell.
His burial in October 1837 aged about 63 years was recorded at St John, Hoxton. His last address was Wellington Street.
