STEWARD, Joseph II (Grimwade p.307, 670-1)

Post by MCB »

He was christened at St Anne & St Agnes in 1731, the son of Joseph (Grimwade p.670) and Mary.
Indentures were signed for John Cape in 1757, for William Lydial in 1761, for William Aldred in 1762, for Robert Fox in 1764 and for Edward Whitlow in 1778 to be the apprentices of John Steward, Citizen and Goldsmith.
He entered a maker's mark at Goldsmiths Hall as a large worker from Haberdasher Square, Grub Street in 1755 , as a small worker from Foster Lane in 1762, from Foster Lane in 1768 and from Wood Street 1770-83. The burial in December 1784 of a Joseph Steward aged 53 years recorded at St Alban, Wood Street who died of asthma may well be relevant. Circumstantially the entry of a maker’s mark from his father’s business address in June 1784 by his son John (Grimwade p.670) may have been a result of Joseph’s failing health.
