READING, John (Grimwade p.306)

Post by MCB »

Indentures were signed in 1752 for John, son of William Reading, late Citizen and Goldsmith of London, to be the apprentice of Meschach Godwin (Grimwade p.525).
He married Sarah Brooks at St Andrew, Holborn in 1759; both were from that parish.
Christenings were recorded at St James, Clerkenwell 1760-67 for four sons and one daughter.
In an undated document indexed to 1790-1 in respect of his son John’s (born 1761) application for freedom by patrimony in the Company of Goldsmiths it is noted that John senior was made free in 1762.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1765 as a case maker from Falcon Court, Coppice Row, Clerkenwell.
He paid duties in 1769 for the apprentice indentures of Arnold Goldenarms.
In 1771 he notified Goldsmiths Hall he had moved to 26 Sea Cole Lane, and entered further marks in 1776 from Hart Street, Covent Garden, in 1780 from King Street, Moorfields, in 1782 from 3 Holywell Row, Moorfields and in 1786 from 3 Garden Court, Red Cross Street.
