ROME, Joseph (Grimwade p.311)

Post by MCB »

He was christened in 1783 at St Sepulchre, the son of Thomas and Sarah Roome (sic).
Indentures were signed in 1797 for Joseph, son of Thomas Rome, watch spring maker of Whitechapel Street, to be the apprentice of John Baxter (Grimwade p.299-300, 338), Citizen, Goldsmith and watch case maker of Banner Street to learn watch case making.
Documents in 1852 and 1867 relating to his sons’ applications for freedom of the City of London by patrimony in the Company of Goldsmiths record he obtained his own freedom in 1805.
He married Mary Thompson at Christ Church, City of London in 1815; both were from that parish.
In 1816 he entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall as a case maker from Northampton Street which was also the address shown on the christening of his son at St James, Clerkenwell recorded in the same year.
Other christening records for their children show their address as Charlotte Street 1818-20 and George Square in 1822.
He entered another maker’s mark in 1828 as a case maker from 6 Cross Street, Shoreditch.
Another christening record shows he had moved to William Street, Islington by 1840.
The 1841 and 1851 UK Census both record him still there.
Throughout the records he was shown as a watch case maker.
In 1861 he was living with his wife in the Goldsmiths' Alms Houses in Acton.
His burial in 1869 aged 85 years is recorded at St Mary, Acton.
