He was christened the son of George and Ann Maw at Owston, Lincolnshire in 1800.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1829 from 55 Aldermanbury as a small worker.
The christening record at St Mary, Aldermanbury in 1830 of Mary Anne, daughter of John Hornby and Mary Anne Maw, shows their address as before and his occupation as a surgeons’ instrument maker.
The christening record of their son Arthur at St Botolph, Aldgate shows their address as Aldersgate Street and his father’s occupation as gentleman.
In 1841 he was in Sussex and of independent means. In 1851 the family were in Worcester but he was absent. In 1861 he was a proprietor of houses in Bloomsbury. In 1871 he was in Broseley, Shropshire as a retired manufacturer and still there in 1881 living on dividend income.
His death in 1885 was registered in Shropshire; his estate was valued at £6875.

Perhaps to be identified with Solomon Maw, who was also a Surgical Instrument Maker, and recorded as the son of George Maw, Merchant, of Peckham, Surrey.
Solomon Maw was Free of the Spectaclemakers' Company in 1843. His working period was 1839-1860 at 11, Aldersgate Street, London. His business was continued as Maw & Son.
