MARRATT, John Symonds (Grimwade p.311)

He was christened in 1809 at St John, Horsleydown, Bermondsey, the son of Edward H, a wireworker, and Sarah Vinson Marratt.
Indentures were signed in 1822 for him to be the apprentice of John Byard, Citizen and Blacksmith. The premium of £5 was paid by the Wardens of Queen Elizabeth Free Grammar School, Southwark.
He married Ann Hull at St John, Horselydown in 1832; both were from that parish.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1833 as a spectacle case maker from 23 Meredith Street, Clerkenwell and notified a change of address to 15 Great Winchester Street, London Wall in 1837.
Indentures were signed in 1839 for William Pugh to be his apprentice. The record shows he was a Citizen and Blacksmith.
He was recorded as an optician at the previous address in 1841.
In 1844 Goldsmiths Hall was notified of a change of address to 63 King William Street, London Bridge and he was recorded there as an optician on the 1851 UK Census.
In 1861 he lived at Pilgrim Hill, Norwood, Surrey and in 1871 at Peak Hill, Lewisham, Surrey.
He had retired by 1881 and lived at Streatham Place, Streatham Hill, Surrey. He died there in 1888 aged 79 years.
Probate for his Will was granted at the Principal Registry in 1889.The value of his estate was £2644.

John Symonds Marratt became Free of the Blacksmiths' Company in 1829.

Noted as an exhibitor at the London Exhibition 1851.

Noted as being in partnership as Marratt & Short 1859-1865.

The business was succeeded by Marratt & Ellis.
