NORVELL, Charles Frederick (Grimwade p.290)

Post by MCB »

He was christened the son of John and Jane at St Botolph, Aldersgate in 1804.
He married Elizabeth Keeling at St Bartholomew the Great in 1826; both were from that parish.
Christening records for two of their children at the same church in 1829 and 1832 show their address as 6 Albion Buildings and 8 Maidenhead Court respectively.
The christening record for a son at St Botolph in 1834 and his first maker’s mark entered at Goldsmiths Hall in 1835 show the Maidenhead Court address.
All christening records show him as a spectacle maker.
He was still in the same trade at 4 Maidenhead Court for the 1841 and 1851 UK Census. In 1841 his parents were living with him; his father was also a spectacle maker.
His wife Elizabeth had died in 1846.
He married Frances Hughesdon at St Bartholomew in 1847 and gave his address as 7 Albion Buildings.
He was shown in the 1856 Post Office Directory as an optician at 2 Hayward’s Place, Bermondsey, his change of address being notified to Goldsmiths Hall in 1857.
No record of his death or burial has so far been found.
Frances Norvell is shown on the 1871 UK Census as a widow living in Southwark.

The short-lived partnership between Charles Norvell and Frederick Edwards (joint mark entered 31-1-1834) was likely to be over the following year, when Frederick Edwards entered a new mark on the 1st July 1835.

Charles's father was likely to be the spectaclemaker, John Norvell, who appears in directories as being located at 2, Fenton's Buildings, Bartholomew Close. 32, Little Bartholomew Close. 66, Bartholomew Close, and finally, at 2, Little Bartholomew Close, during the period 1817-1837.
