The 1851 census taken at Birmingham reveals a Joseph Reffell, widower, aged 66, occupation, Spectacle Maker, born: London. Address: 19, Hill Street, Birmingham.

The 1841 UK Census for Birmingham lists him at 52 Bread Street as a fifty-five year old silversmith with apprentices twenty year old William and fifteen year old John.

He was at 105 Hampton Street, St George, Birmingham for the 1861 UK Census. He was still a spectacle maker but his son William, still resident with him, was by then a gun lock maker.
