NEED, Bartholomew (Grimwade p.289, 333)

Post by MCB »

Bartholomewno (sic) Need, the son of William and Bridgett Need, was christened at St James, Clerkenwell in 1755.
Indentures were signed 1769 for Bartholomew No (sic) Need, son of William Need, poulterer of Clerkenwell Close, Clerkenwell, to be the apprentice of Peter Crammillion (Grimwade p.477), Citizen, Goldsmith and watch case maker of Clerkenwell Close.
The christening of Elizabeth, daughter of Bartholomewno and Eleanor Need, was recorded at St James, Clerkenwell in 1777.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1783 in partnership with John Taylor as case makers from 13 Bridgewater Square and alone in 1784 as a watch case maker from the same address.
As a widower he married spinster Elizabeth French at St John, Clerkenwell in 1786. He signed the register as Bartholomew No Need.
He entered maker’s marks in 1787-96 as a case maker from 6 Cross Street, Clerkenwell and from 1804-9 from 27 Rawstone Street.
Indentures were signed in 179(?) by Matthew the son of Bartholomew No Need, Citizen, Goldsmith and watch case maker of Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, to be his father’s apprentice.
An undated document indexed to 1811 in which Susanna, daughter of Bartholomew No Need, applied for the Freedom of the City of London by patrimony in the Company of Goldsmiths is annotated to show he was made free in 1777 and she was born in 1781.
Again as a widower he married the widow Susanna Urquhart at St Leonard, Shoreditch in 1814; both were from that parish. He signed the register as in 1786.
Probate was granted in 1817 for the Will of Bartholomew No Need, late of Leytonstone. After some pecuniary requests he left his estate to his widow Susanna.
