SOUTHEY, William (Grimwade p.666, 767)

Post by MCB »

The information is thought to relate to William James Southey apprenticed in 1818 and probably born around 1804 who entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1825 from Radnor Street, St Luke parish.
A christening record at St Luke, Finsbury in 1827 for Hannah, daughter of William Southey and Mary Adams, shows her father as a silversmith and their address as the Workhouse.
A christening record at St James, Clerkenwell in 1830 for William, son of William and Mary Southey, shows his father as a silversmith and their address as Compton Street.
The 1841 UK Census for Seward Street, Old Street recorded William senior as a journeyman silversmith aged 36 years living with his wife Mary aged 34 years and son William.
No record of William senior’s death has so far been traced but the 1851 UK Census for King Street, Clerkenwell shows Mary Southey as a widow aged 44 years living with her son William, a watch maker aged 22 years.
