SCAMMELL, Joseph (Grimwade p.652)

Post by MCB »

He married Mary Ellewell at St Alphage, London Wall in 1778; both were from that parish.
Son Joseph was christened at St Botolph, Aldersgate on 13th March 1785. Although no burial record has been found he seemingly died as a baby as there is a christening of another son Joseph on 19th September 1786 at St Mary, Staining. Joseph junior was apprenticed to William Pitts, goldsmith (Grimwade p.626) in 1800. The Indentures show his father was deceased. He became a silversmith and died in London in 1829.
Joseph senior entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall from Staining Lane in 1788.
Son William was christened at St Anne and St Agnes in 1792. In 1814 he applied for freedom of the City by patrimony in the Company of Goldsmiths. He became a chaser and died in London in 1838.
Although no detail of age or last address is shown the burial of a Joseph Scammell recorded in 1796 at St Anne and St Agnes is probably relevant in view of the christening of his son William there in 1792, the Indentures of 1800 showing he was then deceased and the proximity of the church to the silversmith’s last known working address at Noble Street.
