NICHOLSON, Henry (Grimwade p.338)

Post by MCB »

Henry Howard the son of William and Lydia Nicholson was christened at St George, Bloomsbury in 1810.
Henry Howard Nicholson married Maria Green at St John the Evangelist, Lambeth in 1834; both were from that parish.
The christening record at St Pancras Camden in 1835 for Henry Kenneth son of Henry, silversmith, and Maria Nicholson shows his parents’ address as Somers Place, West
Henry Howard Nicholson entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1836 as a watchcase maker from 5 Charles Street, Goswell Street
The christening record at St Pancras, Camden in 1837 for Levinia Mellear daughter of Henry Howard, silversmith and Maria Nicholson shows her parents’ address as Somers Place, Westminster.
Both before and after the registration of the maker’s mark in 1836 from Charles Street Henry and Maria Nicholson lived in Somers Place. The earlier christening record in 1830 at St Luke, Finsbury of Elizabeth Henrietta, daughter of Henry, silversmith and Mary Ann Nicholson of Charles Street, seems coincidental and related to Henry Frederick Nicholson (Grimwade p.607).
The christening records for daughter Clara Maria in 1839 and son William George in 1841 at St Pancras show their parents as Henry, silversmith and Maria from Calthorpe Street or Place respectively.
The 1841 UK Census records the family at Calthorpe Place without mention of Levinia. Henry senior continued as a silversmith.
The birth of another son Sydney George in 1845 was registered in the Strand office. No detail is given of his parents’ address.
The 1851 UK Census shows the family at Green Street, Newington without William George. Henry junior had become an apprentice silversmith. Henry senior continued in the same trade. This record shows his wife Maria had been born in Somerset.
The 1861 UK Census for 37 Charlotte Street, Islington shows son Sydney had also become an apprentice in the same trade as his father. Daughter Clara was a burnisher.
The 1871 UK Census for 118 Albany Road, Camberwell shows Henry senior continuing in the same trade.
The death of Henry Howard Nicholson aged about 69 years was recorded in the Lambeth register in 1878.
