COWIE, John (Grimwade p.475)

Post by MCB »

He married Susannah Larkinson at St George, Bloomsbury in 1830.
The christening record for their son Samuel at St James, Paddington in 1832 shows their address as Paddington and John as a silversmith.
The 1841 UK Census for Hollis Street, Cavendish Square shows he continued as a silversmith.
His burial in 1846 aged 48 years is recorded at All Souls, Kensal Green Cemetery; his last address was Hollis Street.

The Times newspaper of 11th July 1816 carried notice of a sale ordered by the assignees of a bankrupt John Cowie, silversmith and jeweller, for the disposal of the remaining eighteen and a half years of the lease of premises at 6 New Basinghall Street with entrance from Aldermanbury Postern along with stock of silver and other effects.
A further notice of sale of his remaining stock in trade appeared in the same newspaper on 14th November 1816.
He had entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall from Aldermanbury Postern in 1814.
In 1818 he notified Goldsmiths Hall that he had moved to Silver Street, entered a mark in partnership with George Cowie in 1822 and another from 84 Long Acre in 1822.
