RAWLINGS, Benjamin (Grimwade p.356)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He married Sarah Webb Corbyn at St Pancras Parish Chapel in 1811. She was christened in 1786 at St Paul, Shadwell. His birth records have not been found.
The christening record for a daughter and a son at St Martin in the Fields in 1811 and 1814 respectively show their father as a jeweller at 71 St Martin’s Lane. The christening record of another son in 1816 at the same church shows his father as a jeweller at King Street. Christenings of two daughters in 1819 at Christ Church, Southwark record their father as a jeweller at Temple Place.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1822 as a goldworker at 54 Leicester Square.
In 1826 two further sons were christened at St Paul, Covent Garden and their father was again recorded at King Street.
No records for Sarah Webb Rawlings have been traced after those in 1826.
Indentures signed in 1830 for his son Benjamin William to be an apprentice to James Fawcett, Citizen & Haberdasher, show his father’s address as a jeweller at Gough Square.
There is an 1841 UK Census record for a Benjamin Rawlings as a jeweller living at Ringwood Street, Southwark without any family. Although the recorded age of the individual there is 45 years the information may be relevant as no other records have been traced in the name.
His daughter Charlotte Mary is recorded living with her brother Benjamin William’s household in 1851.
Another daughter Sara is recorded in that year as the niece of Charles Rawlings goldsmith (Grimwade p.637) living at 17 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea.
