PHILLIPS, John (Grimwade p.368)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

There are christening records at St James, Clerkenwell in 1766 for daughter Elizabeth, in 1768 for Mary, in 1769 for son John and in 1773 for George.
Indentures were signed in 1783 for John son of John Phillips, goldsmith of Cold Bath Square to be the apprentice of Michael Gamon, goldsmith of Noble Street (Grimwade p.284 and 374) and in 1787 by George son of John Phillips, goldsmith of St James parish, Clerkenwell to be the apprentice of Samuel Gamon, goldsmith of St Ann parish.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1788 as a goldworker at 1 Cold Bath Square.
Further marks were entered in 1802, 1813 and 1815 from either 1 or 2 Cold Bath Square. The one in October 1815 may have been entered by John Phillips junior as it appears from the following that his father had recently died.
Probate was granted in November 1815 for the Will of John Phillips, goldsmith of St James, Clerkenwell.
