He was born Robert Owen Aland in Aldgate in 1797 and christened at Holy Trinity, Minories in 1798. His parents were Isaac and Sarah.
He married Susannah Bretell at St Anne, Soho in 1825; both were from that parish.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1830 as a goldworker at 29 Gerrard Street, Soho.
The 1841 UK Census records him as a goldsmith aged 40 years at Gerrard Street, Soho living with Isaac Aland, a goldsmith aged 45 years and Thomas Aland, a clerk aged 20 years.
The 1851 UK Census shows 29 Gerrard Street occupied by a Robert Aland, a goldsmith’s assistant aged 31 years, living with his wife Eliza but the whereabouts of Robert Owen Aland has not been traced.
He is recorded in the Channel Islands Census of 1861 as a retired goldsmith aged 62 years at 29 Hautville, St Peter Port Guernsey living with his wife Mary Ann, two children born in England in 1844 and 1850 and a daughter born in Jersey in 1854.
In 1871 he was living as a retired goldsmith with his wife Mary Ann at 493, Old Kent Road, London. In the same year there is a record in the Islington register of his marrying Mary Ann Champion.
By 1881aged 83 years he had moved to 17 Fonthill Road, Upper Holloway, was still living with his wife Mary Ann and was still retired.
His death in 1884 is recorded in the Islington register.
