Goldworkers List (Section VII).
He was born around 1802 in London.
He married Martha Elizabeth Ridley in 1821 at St George the Martyr church, Queen’s Square; both were from that parish.
Their first child was christened in 1823 at St Anne, Soho where the father was recorded as a jeweller from Grafton Street.
He entered a maker’s mark in 1824 at Goldsmiths Hall as a goldworker at 16 Porter Street. The christening of their next child at St Anne, Soho in 1825 confirms the father as a jeweller at the Porter Street address.
Three christenings of their children 1831-2 at St Giles in the Fields confirm the change of address to 12 Clarke’s Buildings recorded at Goldsmiths Hall in 1832; a further christening in 1833 at the same church confirms the recorded change in 1832 to 54 High Street and two christenings at St Anne, Soho in 1835-7 the recorded change to 32 Greek Street. All of the christening records show the father as a jeweller.
The last change of address to 10 St Mary Street, Lambeth reported to Goldsmiths Hall in 1840 is confirmed by the 1841 UK Census record which shows him there as a working jeweller. Also resident, along with other children, is his son Alfred (born around 1827) who was also working in the jewellery trade.
There is a record in 1841 in the St Mary, Lambeth register of Martha Elizabeth Rogers’ burial aged 41 years, her last address being St Mary Street.
The 1851 UK Census shows he continued at 10 St Mary Street aged 49 years and records he was a silversmith.
The 1861 records show he was at 1 Red LionYard, Clerkenwell aged 59 years again stating he was a jeweller.
He does not appear on the 1871 UK Census. The England & Wales Deaths Index entry for a William Rogers for the Islington register in 1862 may be relevant but these records do not show detail of age or last address to be certain.
