Goldworkers List (Section VII).
Born around 1806.
Married Grace Wilkins at Christ Church and St Leonard, Foster Lane on 24th December 1829. Both parties of that parish.
1841 UK Census for Goodbridge Street, Clerkenwell as a jeweller living his wife Grace along with 3 of their 7 children, of which 4 survived.
1851 UK Census for 1 Bishop's Court, Clerkenwell shows Grace Dear as a jeweller's wife along with 5 children, the youngest aged 9 years. Edmund Dear is not resident.
No record of Edmund Dear's death has been traced between 1851-61.
1861 UK Census for an unreadable address in the Goswell Street area of Clerkenwell shows Grace Dear as a widow living with 3 of her sons. This should of course mean her husband had died. A coincidence in the 1861 UK Census record at another address in Clerkenwell is the appearance of a jeweller by the name of Edmund Dear aged 54 years living with a different wife and family. Re: DEAR, Edmund (Grimwade p.358)
There is a 15 Sept 1806 birth recorded at St James, Clerkenwell for Edmond son of Thomas and Frances Dear.
Edmund Dear jeweller is recorded in the 1848 Post Office Directory at the same address as the 1841 Census.
Grace Dear is listed in the 1861 census as living on the support of her children (her son Edmund was a clockmaker) but
not widowed.
The ages of the children of Edmund Dear in later census's begin just after the youngest of his children born by Grace.
An Edmund Dear jeweller who is the correct age for the subject of this topic is listed in the 1871 census at 27 Penton Street, St James, Clerkenwell.
The death of an Edmund Dear age 70 is recorded in the first quarter of 1876 in the Holborn District.

Re: DEAR, Edmund (Grimwade p.358)
Thanks for that Pat.
There is what appears to be a "W" in the marital status box on the 1861 UK Census record for Grace Dear and no mention of her husband or that she was married. As he had also been absent in 1851 it seemed possible he may have died 1851-61.
A jeweller named Edmund Dear born 1806-7 is recorded on the UK Census records twice. In 1861 married to Mary born 1807 with a family aged between 2 and 18 years and in 1871 married to Anne born 1807 but without a family.
Grace Dear is recorded on the 1871 UK Census as married but on the 1881 record as a widow. If the Edmund Dear who died in 1876 was her husband this would make sense but for the fact that he is recorded nowhere else in either the 1861 or 1871 records. The Edmund Dear who is recorded there is said to be married to other ladies and divorce in those times was a difficult matter.
Is the jeweller Edmund Dear born 1806-7 mentioned in the 1861 and 1871 Census records Grace's husband? Perhaps for Forum purposes the record should show that the death in 1876 possibly relates to the man mentioned on page 358 of Grimwade's book.

Re: DEAR, Edmund (Grimwade p.358)
I see what you mean about the "W." in the 1861 census Mike, thanks.
