ANDREWS, John (Grimwade p 423)

Post by buckler »

Son of George Andrews of Colesbatch in Leicester, grazier who was dead by 1740.

5 June 1740
Apprenticed to George Andrews, citizen and Goldsmith, then turned over to Elizabeth Andrews his widow. Apprentice Book 6, page 293 or 297, presumably on the death of George in December

2 December 1740
Parish Registers of St Luke, Old Street record the burial of George Andrews, who died of a fever .

11 January 1743
IGI records the marriage on an Ann King to a John Andrews at St Martin, Leicester. Seems very early in his apprenticeship but Leicestershire and the surname King seem to fit

7 April 1745
Parish Register of St Luke Old Street records the baptism of Ann King daughter of John Andrews and Ann
25 May 1746
Parish Register of St Luke Old Street records the baptism of Mary Princess daughter of John Andrews and Ann
It would appear that the Andrew family had a peculiar sense of humour !

6 September 1751
Free of the Goldsmiths. Long after apprenticeship. The Goldsmiths Court Book 15, page 342 records that John Andrews put one guinea into the Poor Widows Box in lieu of a fine for neglecting to take up his freedom in due time .

Took apprentices as follows
1752 Thomas Wellborn (Book 7 page 186)
1754 Joseph Stock (Book 7 page 210)
6 November 1754 - Thomas Wilkinson (Book 7 page 215)
1755 Edward Curtiss (Book 7 page 226)
1758 George Andrews (son) Book 7 page 264)

20 October 1754
Parish Register of St Luke Old Street records the death of a John Andrews, a child, from convulsions. No record of baptism.

Almost certainly had marks in the lost smallworkers register. See http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 59&t=17527" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. for one I consider may well be his.

9 August 1758
Only known recorded mark entered as smallworker, Brick Lane , Old Street.

18 March 1759
The burial of a John Andrews is recorded in the Parish Register of St Luke, Old Street. Cause of death is "Suddenly "

26 March 1759
Ann ANDREWS, his widow records her first smallworkers mark at Brick Lane.
Ann also entered marks 27 June 1760 and 16 June 1761.

23 February 1762
Saint Giles Cripplegate Without parish registers records the marriage of Laurence Coughlan, widower to Anne Andrews, widow, by licence . St Giles was the original parish for the area, St Luke's parish having been created in 1733 in part of it to relieve pressure on St Giles

27 March 1762
Laurence Coughlan records first known mark. Address Brick Lane, Old Street.
See http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 74&t=25327" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
7 November 1763
Thomas WILKINSON entered a mark as smallworker at Brick Lane, Old Street . He was in the PR1773 as a bucklemaker at Pear Tree Street , near Old Street)

Note There was a John Andrews shown in the LTA in Foster Lane in 1755/56 to 1762/63. He followed Joseph Hornby and was succeeded by David Hennell .

22 January 1767
A George Andrews, perhaps his son , was insured at "opposite Beach Lane in White Cross Street " as a silversmith . Grimwade page 423 ,gives him at Red Lion Street, and Heal records him both at Red Lion Street and White Cross Street . White Cross Street is in the Brick Lane area, and Red Ion Street in nearby Clerkenwell

Colesbatch , in Leicester, where John probably originated from, is actually the place in the extreme south west of the county now known as Cotesbach. It seems it was regularly spelt in printed sources of the period as Colesbatch , or Cotesbatch. Or even Cottesbach.
