Born 1791 in Braintree Essex.
1820 married Catharine Combs. Marriage record for St Andrew, Holborn dated 9th January 1820.
1841 UK Census for Wellington Street, Clerkenwell as a silversmith aged 50 years. Other residents included sons Charles (born circa 1830), George (circa 1832) and James (circa 1833) along with apprentice silversmiths John Bigger (circa 1826) and William Barnet or Barrat (circa 1821).
1842 wife Catharine died. England & Wales Death Index 1837-1915 Sl Luke, London register.
1844 married Mary Bowman, a widow aged 44 years. The St Andrew, Holborn Marriage register dated 14th January 1844 gives both their addresses as 29 Farringdon Street. In the record his father is named as George Boyton, a silversmith (Grimwade records his father as a weaver in 1807). Her father is named as Combs. It looks as though Boyton may have married his deceased wife's sister.
1851 UK Census for 19 Upper Charles Street, Clerkenwell as a silversmith aged 58 years (it isn't uncommon for the age of the person to be incorrect!). All three sons were still resident and all are recorded as silversmiths. Also resident was his brother in law Alexander Coombs (Combs?) an inkstand maker aged 45 years.
1854-5 sons George and James were briefly in partnership together as silversmiths and then traded separately per Volume 1 page 55 of John Culme's Directory of Gold & Silversmith 1837-1914
1861 UK Census for 111 Goswell Road, Clerkenwell as a retired silversmith aged 70 years. Brother in law was still resident.
Son Charles Boyton is noted on the same page of John Culme's book as running the business in 1873. He was seemingly running it before 1861 in view of his father's reference to retirement and certainly by 1864.
Charles Boyton senior died in that year aged 73 years according to the burial entry for St Pancras St James, Camden dated 24th November 1864. At the date of death he was still living at 111 Goswell Road.
Engand & Wales Probate Calendar 1861-1941 records his effects as less than £4000.
