Of his origins and apprenticeship : -
Grimwade states "Perhaps the son of John Wilson of the parish of St George ,yeoman. Apprenticed to James Coby 1 April 1761 and free 1st March 1769"
Goldsmiths Hall Apprentice Book 8 page 225 records the apprenticeship in 1772 of William Wilson, son of Richard Wilson to Thomas Vanes ,Weaver .
Connections ?
7th April 1780 - Thomas Wilson son of William Wilson , St Luke Old Street, Middlesex, silversmith, apprenticed to Robert Underwood, , Fishmongers' Company.
Evidence (see William Playfair above) suggests that Grimwade comment that he seems unconnected with William Wilson, bucklemaker, entered 1785, is incorrect.
WILSON, William (Grimwade p.706, 406)

Re: WILSON, William (Grimwade p.706, 406)
16 November 1784 William Wilson of the Parish of Saint Pancras in the County of Middlesex aged twenty-six years Batchelor and Silversmith bound in marriage to Isabella Barclay aged twenty-two years Spinster of the same parish.
Re: WILSON, William (Grimwade p.706, 406)
The above marriage record indicates William Wilson's birth was around 1758. This is supported by the Goldsmiths Hall Apprentice Book recording his apprenticeship in 1772 to Thomas Vanes ,Weaver .
Thus Grimwades suggestion "Perhaps the son of John Wilson of the parish of St George ,yeoman. Apprenticed to James Coby 1 April 1761 and free 1st March 1769" is almost certainly incorrect.
