He is mentioned on page 186 of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World with regard to a watch made in Liverpool in 1754. Many Liverpool watch makers registered their marks at the Chester Assay Office. The Compendium of Chester Gold & Silver Marks 1570-1962 by Maurice H Ridgway and Philip T Priestley shows the Laithwait name in the city as watch case makers from around 1700 but no mention of this John Laithwait.
He entered marks at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1755 by attorney as he was in Liverpool, in 1759 from Cold Bath Street, London and in 1778 from 104 Gray’s Inn Lane, London, all as a case maker.
The burial at St Andrew Holborn 1781 of a Robert Laithwaite (not in Grimwade’s book) aged 50 years shows his last address as 50 Gray’s Inn Lane. His Will as a watch case maker of St Andrew, Holborn was proved for probate on 2nd October 1781 (National Archives reference PROB11/1083/9). He is mentioned on page 218 of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World as active in Liverpool in 1734 and in London from 1746. He was probably related.
The burial of a John Laithwaite, late of Gray’s Inn Lane, was registered at St Andrew, Holborn on 3rd April 1788.
William Laithwait (Grimwade p.328) entered a mark from the same address on 8th April 1788. No records have been found to establish the relationship between them. A list of journeymen and apprentices of John Laithwait in 1779 to be found elsewhere on this Forum makes no mention of William.
