WALDGRAVE, Charles (Grimwade p.692)

Post by buckler »

21st January 1736 - Charles Waldgrave entered mark as bucklemaker at Four Dove Court, St Martin le Grand. Horwood 's great map shows it as "4 Dove Court" just off St Martins le Grand.

The Trial and confession below concerns an apprentice of a Thomas Walgrave, a silversmith for whom Grimwade has no entry. Either this is a brother in the same area without a mark or the Proceedings or Goldsmiths Hall have wrong forename. The name of Elizabeth Walgrave is given in the trial, almost certainly his wife. The trial details are not for the squeamish.

17th January 1739 - Old Bailey t17390117-11 John Adamson.. ....feloniously did make an Assault .........
Thomas Walgrave . .....and I suspected the Prisoner, who was my Apprentice .

Old Bailey - Ordinary's Account, 14th March 1739. -- Reference Number: OA17390314
Mr. Walgrave, a Silversmith , in St. Martins le Grand, out of Charity and Compassion, supposing him an honest young Fellow, and capable of learning his Art, took him Apprentice about four Years ago; here he learn'd his Business, and pleased his Master, and might have got his living very well, had not his vicious Prospensity for lewd Women driven him into Misfortunes; for he had not been above a Year in his Service, before he got the foul Disease, and his Master was so good, that he employ'd and pay'd a Surgeon for curing him, twice . He was very ungrateful to Mr. Walgrave, who was a kind Master to him, and had done him many Favours.
