Post by buckler »

The whole matter of the Willam Tyler's is somwhat complicated and confusing.
Given below are the known facts

William Tyler, Buckle chape forger, Near theWhite Horse, Brick Lane was insured for £100 in 1777
[1777 SUN 1 259 05\11\79 ML Policy Number 387974 ]

3 June 1778 - Proceedings of the Old Bailey ref t17780603-48.
William Tyler was one of three accused of theft and was found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment The judgement was then respited till next sessions. Richard Gardiner, who gave him an alibi was later successfully proscecuted fo perjury.
Some details :
RICHARD GARDINER sworn.
I am a buckle-maker; William Tyler worked for me four months.
BENJAMIN MONTAGUE sworn.
Tyler worked for me eight or nine years as a silver-caster, in the silver-smith way; he left me about a year and a half ago
THOMAS EATON sworn.
I have known him about a year and a half; he came to work with the master I worked with; he always behaved very well; I have left my master about two months.
What business was your master? - silver buckle maker.

Whether or not he served a sentence is unknown.

However Goldsmiths Hall Apprentice Book 9, page 101 records William Tyler, son of William Tyler apprenticed to Philip Smith , watchcase maker in 1784 who might be the same man .

This son could be the William Tyler who entered a marks as bucklemaker at 67, Bunhill Row in 1790. He took the premise over from a Richard Tyler who'd registered a bucklemaker mark there himself in 1789.

William later moved to 45, Seaward Street , Brick Lane which may have been his fathers old abode.
