Grimwade gives a John Turner as entering a bucklemaker mark "near the Nag's Head, Hackney Road" in 1775
The location is easy to find on the Horwood map and virtually the only buildings there are actually marked as Goldsmiths Place ! Even now the location is called Goldsmiths Square and the track Goldsmiths Row .
This entry is signed with an "X" so is unlikely to be the same man as below, who was literate .
John Turmer and Edward Morson registered a joint marks as bucklemakers on 22nd March 1780 at 23, Lower Charles Street, Hatton Garden . The partnership seems to have been shortlived as John Turner registered a sole mark there seven months later on 18th October 1780. By 23 February 1792 another bucklemaker , Charles Rabon , occupied 23, Charles Street.
To further complicate matters there was a Fire Insurance Policy in 1779 for £200 taken out by John Turner, Silver Bucklemaker , 4 New Street Square, Shoe Lane.[Fire Insurance Policy Register, 1777-17861779 SUN 1 270 22\08\79 BN Policy Number 408948 ]
Which John Turner, if either, this refers to is unknown !
