NASH, Thomas (Grimwade p.604, 760, 402, 321)

Post by buckler »

Grimwade gives a variety of addresses for Thomas Nash which suggests to me that his entry covers at least two separate men.
One was of the Carpenters Company and worked in the City, ending up at Water Lane, Fleet Street and bankrupt in 1782; and the other was in Dalston in Hackney. Only the Hackney one is given in PR1773

3rd October 1749 - Carpenters' Company Minute Books of Courts and Committees records
Thomas Nash, Son of Samuel Nash Citizen and Carpenter of London was now made free by Patrimony on the Testimony of Robert Duncan Citizen and Wax-Chandler and Daniel Bartram Citizen and Dyer of London.

5 October 1762 - Carpenters' Company Minute Books of Courts and Committees records
Joseph Morley the late Apprentice to Thomas Nash Citizen and Carpenter turned over to Thomas Justis Citizen and Merchant Taylor of London for the Remainder of his time.

6th September 1763 - Carpenters' Company Minute Books of Courts and Committees records
Richard Lacy Son of Wm. Lacy of the Parish of St. George Com Glamorgan South Wales Clerk bound to Thomas Nash Citizen and Carpenter and afterwards turn'd over to Thomas Justis and now made Free on the Testimony of Thomas Nash and Thomas Justis.

13 December 1772 - Daily Advertiser reports " Whereas Daniel Mitten, Errant -Man to Mr Nash , silversmith at Dalston , St. John, Hackney has taken money under false pretences "

7th October 1777 - Carpenters' Company Minute Books of Courts and Committees records
Thomas Nash bound to his Father Thomas Nash of Water Lane Fleet, Street Citizen and Carpenter of London . Consideration Nil

6th March 1782 - Carpenters' Company Minute Books of Courts and Committees records

1 July 1782 - Public Advertiser reports " Thomas Nash, late of Water Lane, Silversmith to surrender" [as bankrupt]

Gentlemans Magazine reports him as bankrupt in September 1782 at above address

London Gazette 13097 of 16 May 1789 also refers to his bankrupcy

12 September 1748 John Foll Goswell Street Middlesex watchmaker paid apprentice indenture duty for Thomas son of William Nash. One more possibility.

As has been seen, our Mr Thomas Nash was somewhat of a peripatetic silversmith.
And it appears he had other strange habits.
.
Two examples of his 14th January 1767 smallworkers mark are given below .
The "dogtooth" to the bottom is very clearly visible, and one can see the upper one , although less distinctly.
They are on a stock (neck cravat ) buckle of c1770, which has only his mark struck twice. No Lion Passant at all.

The marks below is believed to be examples of one of his bucklemakers marks from 1773 or 1776. They on a shoe buckle of around 1780 , again with only his mark struck twice - and again no Lion Passant.

I have only ever seen two buckles bearing his mark.
And neither have assay marks !
An interesting man .
