LILLEY, Job (Grimwade p.283, 583)

Post by buckler »

Job Lilley is mentioned in Old Bailey case t17451016-17 of 16th October 1745
" Job Lilly. - John Penn brought this buckle to me to sell: it weighs twelve penny wt. it is not standard marked silver. I knew Penn, for he had lived with a silver buckle maker: he said it might be as good silver though it was not standard marked, as if it had, and so it may, but it is not very probable. . .. The boy owned he took the buckle out of the shoe, and sold it to Penn, and Penn owned he bought it for a penny, and sold it to Mr. Lilly for 3 s."

Job Lilley died around 1765

William Lilley , his son as given by Grimwade on page 573, entered his first mark as smallworker on 26 July 1765 at the Minories and was in PR 1773 as bucklemaker at Smithfield Bars. Grimwade comments "It would seem he took over his father's address after 1765, perhaps on the latters death."

More likely to be another relative as on 9 July 1765 the Lloyds Evening Post reports the death of Mr Robert Lilley Sen. , Silversmith at Smithfield Bars .
Unless JOB Lilley = ROBERT Lilley
