HOUGHAM, Charles (Grimwade 552 & 388)

Post by buckler »

Charles Hougham was the younger brother of Solomon Hougham .
Christened 12th October 1748 at St Alphages, Canterbury

For a very comprehensive account of the Hougham family see http://www.royroyes.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
from which the following information was taken.

His father was Solomon Hougham, born 1704, Bromley, London - Referred to as the Younger - an Excise Officer.
Mother was Lydia Hunt, born 1706. Solomon and Lydia were married 18th Dec 1739 at St Dionis Backchurch, Fenchurch Street.
This site also indicates that the Hougham family came from Sandwich in Kent and were landowners at the end of the 17th century including the "manor or lordship of Barton ". There is at least one error on this site but it is a mine of information and documentation on the Hougham, Dix and Royes families

Charles Hougham’s own details are at http://hougham.royroyes.net/getperson.p ... ee=hougham" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
which includes a full transcript of his will (under Notes ) and a photo of the Hougham memorial monument at St Botolph's without, Aldersgate showing the family Coat of Arms.

Apprenticed 4th July 1764 to Henry Corry and free of the Curriers

He took as apprentices :-
George Stevens
Henry Jago (1768)
John Bowden (1769)
George Price (1771)
Joseph Simonds (1772)
William Present (1773)
George Whitaker (1775)
Reddist Howard (1785)
John Cook Pettit

19th May 1790 Diary or Woodfalls Register carries an advert for a charity for the relief of victims of a fire at Long Lane and Aldersgate Street. Charles Hougham's name appears as subscribing 5 guineas. From contemporary newspapers he also was a Churchwarden

The will of Charles Hougham, Goldsmith of Aldersgate Street London dated 4th March 1785 was proved 6th March 1794 at PCC.
An surprisingly long period had elapsed since without even a codicil to amend or supercede it . He was only 44 when he died so the suspicion must be that Charles’ death was totally unexpected.

Charles' will states "whereas I am now engaged in Partnership with my Brother Solomon Hougham in Business on account of which a great amount of my property is now remaining in Trade.. . . . . " so he probably specifically made this will when he entered into the partnership with his brother Solomon or soon after the death of his wife. There is provision for Solomon to delay settlement of the partnership if he still carries on trading after the death of Charles. Provision for " Ann Ward Daughter of my late Wife .. "
The will appoints Solomon Hougham executor if Ann has not achieved the age of 17 at the time of Charles' death but appoints Ann executrix if she is of that age.

Witnesses were Joseph Simons , Henry Jago , John Bowden [All three were ex- apprentices of Charles Hougham]

Proved by "Ann Ward Spinster the sole executrix named in the said will (she having achieved the age of seventeen years ) "

It is probable that Anne Warde was a widow when Charles married her, and brought a daughter from that marriage.

Sometime between October 1768 and May 1769, Charles son of Solomon Houghman currier of London was made free in the company of curriers by patrimony. Charles' freedom paper shows Solomon's admission year was 1726 and Charles' birth year was 1721.
