GOOSTREE, Samuel (Grimwade p.521-GIBSON))

Post by buckler »

The PR1773 gives Samuel Goostree of Whitecross Alley, Moorfields as a Bucklemaker and it is likely that he had a mark in the smallworkers register.

Grimwade mentions him on page 521 as having an incuse mark in partnership with GIBBONS, James at White Cross Alley in 1763. However this is not given in Section V. (Incuse Marks of All Categories)

Grimwade appears to have omitted several incuse marks from section V , although noting them in the biographies.

The name Goostree is not common but exists in Old Bailey Trial records in 1707, 1732 , 1752 and 1783.
A Samuel Goostree , who describes himself in a 1783 trial as " a dealer in coals. I live in Moorfields " may , in view of the area be related. This Goostree was robbed of Ten Guineas while intoxicated after visiting Drury Lane playhouse.
