EATON, Thomas (Grimwade p.401)

Post by buckler »

Thomas Eaton & Brook Walker entered a joint bucklemakers mark at 4, Salisbury Court on 30th March 1778

From the court case given below it would appear that Thomas had just left his master, Richard Gardiner, in late March 1778, presumably having just finished his apprenticeship, or as a journeyman.

Richard Gardiner - I am a buckle-maker; William Tyler [the defendant] worked for me four months.
Benjamin Montague - Tyler worked for me eight or nine years as a silver-caster, in the silver-smith way; he left me about a year and a half ago
Thomas Eaton - I have known him about a year and a half; he came to work with the master [Richard Gardiner] I worked with; he always behaved very well; I have left my master about two months.
Court - What business was your master? - silver buckle maker
(3 June 1778 - Proceedings of the Old Bailey ref t17780603-48)

Brook Walker apparently soon left the partnership, as he entered a separate mark as bucklemaker at 111, Salisbury Court, on 29th October 1779.

Thomas Eaton remained at 4, Salisbury Court, registering a sole mark as bucklemaker on 1st October 1779.
Thomas was still there in 1784 as he is shown insured in that year as Thomas Eaton, Silversmith No 4 Salisbury Court, Fleet Street

Bucklemaker Eatons appear to have been common in Salisbury Court in the 1790’s see
