BEEDALL, Mary (Grimwade p.398)

Post by buckler »

Wife and widow of Samuel BEEDALL, who entered a bucklemaker mark 9th January 1776 at 237, High Holborn, Bloomsbury, moving in 1777 to Thorney Street and remaining there until his death in early 1780 .

Mary was the sole executrix and beneficiary of his will, made 15th February 1780 and proved at PCC a
month later on 17th March 1780. The will indicates that he was very ill at the time of signing .

She, as Mary Hill, Spinster had married Samuel Beedall on 16th of January. The witnesses to Beedall’s will were William Yardley and Thomas Hill, the latter presumably a close relative and perhaps the silver bucklemaker whose first registered mark was in 1788. ( Leslie Southwick) Both may well have been journeymen of Beedall.

Five days after proving the will Mary entered a joint mark bucklemaker with William Yardley as Mary BEEDLE & William YARDLEY on 22nd March 1780
Yardley, who was 24 years of age wasted no time, and married Mary on 30th April 1780 , Thomas Hill and John Padmore being witnesses.

His name alone replaced Samuel Beadall (sic) as the householder in the poor rate book in August and he entered a solo mark at 5, Thorney Street in November 1780 and Mary's name disappears from the register. But William did not neglect her, she and William had at least nine children, the last one born in 1795. (Leslie Southwick, "London Silver Hilted Swords and their Makers")
