makers name on back of SP flatware

Absolute newbie here!! please forgive if this question has been asked and answered before.
I notice on old silver flatware, the makers' name is inscribed into the handle. Later flatware, the letters are raised above the surface. Approximately what date did this change take place? I assume it has to do with the technology of the times. Thanks in advance.
