York Jeweler?

Postby michaelhallows » Sun Jan 02, 2011 9:27 pm

Hi,
I am looking for information on Henry Preston (a forbear) who I believe was a jewelry retailer in York in the mid 1800's. He seems to have been associated with Henry Steward also of York and possibly a Lord Mayor. A gift (a large engraved silver tray) was made in 1869 by Steward to Preston's daughter, Helena, my great grand mother.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael Hallows

Trev,
Many thanks, this gives me a good start. If his wife was named Elizabeth I think he is my ancestor.

In Hugh Murrays excellent book on York Goldsmiths there is an entry for Henry Preston:

Son of William and Elizabeth Preston of Easingwold, bricklayer.
Apprenticed to Henry Steward, watchmaker, indenture 7 sept 1829, 7 years, consideration £50. (free 23 July 1838)
Silversmith and Jeweller of 8 Parliment St 1844-1882.
One of the original guarantors of the Yorkshire gala, 1858
Director, York Gas Company 1877-1911
Died 15 Jan 1917 aged 101 years 9 months 7 days (amazing!!!)

Hope that helps a bit
