date seems confusing

date seems confusing

hello, these are the marks on a teacaddy. I am fairly certain the maker is Henry Matthews but the date design has me baffled Any ideas appreciated. Noel Image

I agree the maker is Henry Matthews and the date letter is the italic letter v for 1895. I know it looks a lot like the letter b but if you compare with the example on Phils site below you will see that its a match.

After bringing up the page, click on the column containing 1895 and then on the individual year and you will see a photo of the hallmarks.
