colonial teaspoons

Post by rat-tail »

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone could assist with these marks - looks like a late Victorian pattern and got a date engraving for 1886, any idea who GH might be - or where he was working. - Many thanks Frank

PS sprry pics shot at night under brass chandeliers - hence the goldish colours

Hi Frank,

They look like Continental European spoons to me.

Hi Miles - many thanks

I assume by this date most European countries had effective marking systems generally in force, which would seem to rule out France, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Portugal and Russia (and areas or Eastern Europe under Russian influence). I think - if I remember correctly - German national marking systems only came into force in 1886, so these could predate that making Germany and Scandinavia the most likely candidates. Although nothing about 19th century Italian marks.

Regards Frank
