Peter Marsh?

Post by Granmaa »

Does anyone know who this PM is? Grimwade mentions a Peter Marsh, but he's a bit early. Also curious is the absence of the lion passant.

Hello Miles,

I think it might be Pierre Maingy of Guernsey. He was working between 1739 -1776, so that would fit the style. I have seen that small shell on several Channel Island spoons and there are records of him making both table spoons and tea spoons.

Hi,

Great spot Paul, and great find Miles.

Pierre Maingy was apprenticed in London to John Swift (Grimwade 1651, 1689, 3686, 3708) in 1732 before returning to his native Guernsey.

My first piece of Channel Island silver! Thankyou very much Paul.
I've been intending for a while now to do some research into the differing shells on shell-backs: this might be my spur.
